See World-Famous Hearst Castle
Tour the Rooms of this European-Inspired Landmark
Our Cambria hotel is near the magnificent Hearst Castle. Built over the course of 28 years by Julia Morgan, under the direction of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, Hearst Castle is an architectural marvel. The estate is a massive melding of historic design styles that Hearst admired during his travels around Europe throughout his life. He was an inexhaustible buyer and his collection of art and antiques rivals many museums around the world.
The castle featured 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, 127 acres of gardens, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a movie theater, an airfield, and the world's largest private zoo. A variety of exotic animals still roam the grounds.
In its heyday of the 20’s and 30’s, invitations to Hearst Castle were highly coveted. Hollywood film stars and politicians often visited, including Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Marx Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, James Stewart, Bob Hope, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin Roosevelt, Dolores Del Rio, and Winston Churchill. Since 1957, when the Hearst Corporation donated the castle to the state, visitors have been able to tour the grounds with its impressive collection of art and antiques, remarkable design elements and breathtaking views.
